Gus Renze

Sign painter Gus Renze joined future Ak-Sar-Ben Governors on a trip to New Orleans in 1895 to inspect and purchase floats and costumes from Mardi Gras. Renze and an assistant then transformed the purchased Big Easy floats for use in Ak-Sar-Ben’s first parade. Floats were horse-drawn until 1898, when floats were attached by trolley to streetcar wires, creating the first fully illuminated parade. Floral floats were added in 1912. Seventy-five thousand people, including President and Mrs. Woodrow Wilson, viewed a historical parade in 1916. Ak-Sar-Ben parades continued until 1927, when a fire swept through the Ak-Sar-Ben Den and destroyed all the floats. This collection includes Renze’s drawings of floats from the years of 1896, 1897, 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1904, 1905, 1907, 1908, 1909, 1910 and 1912 through 1918. This collection was graciously donated by Doug Buchanan and Renze Display. In 2020, Renze Display will be celebrating 125 years of business.
