The current DCHS exhibit highlights Omaha’s historic streetcar system. Active from the 1860s until 1955, Omaha’s streetcar lines were once the primary way for Omaha residents to get around town. They were used to commute to work, to go grocery shopping, and to go to church. The exhibit contains photos of Omaha’s streetcar heyday and features an authentic seat, route maps, tickets, and replica conductor uniforms.
In addition, the exhibit explores some of the many issues with streetcars – their frequent accidents, weather delays, and the occasional worker’s strike that plagued the streetcar lines until their final days.
The Nitty Gritty of a Streetcar City is now open to all Museum guests in the lower level of the General Crook House Museum, which is open seven days a week. But hurry – this exhibit closes Sunday, May 30th!
